Deadly Russian Strikes Claim Lives in Ternopil, Inflict Injuries Across Western Ukraine

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a series of brutal strikes, Russian forces have killed at least ten individuals and injured many more in western Ukraine, targeting two residential buildings in Ternopil, as reported by Ukrainian officials. Among the casualties, 12 children were injured, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the region since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko indicated that the strikes extended to other areas, including Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. In Kharkiv, a drone assault injured over 30 people across three neighborhoods, with images surfacing online depicting vehicles and structures engulfed in flames.

Infrastructure and Power Disruptions
The Ukrainian Energy Ministry confirmed that widespread power outages have affected numerous regions. Critical energy infrastructure, transportation networks, and civil facilities suffered considerable damage, especially in Ivano-Frankivsk, where two injured were children. Officials in Lviv confirmed that an energy facility sustained hits.

President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Russia unleashed over 470 drones and 47 missiles, leading to “significant destruction” and raising concerns about civilians possibly trapped beneath the debris in Ternopil.

Increased Tensions Amid Military Actions
These attacks came following Ukraine’s acknowledgment of utilizing US-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles against targeted military sites in Russia—a first in this conflict. Moscow asserted that four missiles aimed for Voronezh were intercepted by air defense systems.

Regional Security Heightens
The strikes intensified security measures in bordering nations. Romanian authorities reported a Russian drone briefly invading Romanian airspace, subsequently traversing into Ukraine and Moldova before returning, prompting the deployment of both Romanian and German fighter jets. Poland also preemptively closed two airports in its southeast region in response to the assaults.

Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Conflict
In light of the increasing violence, President Zelensky is headed to Ankara, Turkey, to advocate for renewed US-supported peace initiatives. While he will engage with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Kremlin has made it clear that Russia will not partake in these discussions. The talks are reportedly shaped by proposals from Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with his Russian counterpart Kirill Dmitriev.

As February 2026 marks the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, stark disagreements remain between Moscow and Kyiv over peace terms. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated that Russia’s terms for a peace settlement continue to be unchanged from 2024.

These attacks highlight the precarious security situation in western Ukraine and the potential for the conflict to extend into neighboring countries. Civilians face ongoing risks from missile and drone strikes, while damage to energy and infrastructure complicates humanitarian efforts. International observers continue to monitor developments, emphasizing the urgent necessity for diplomatic actions to curtail further escalation.
