Safety Alert: Power Bank Fire Averted on Singapore Airlines Flight

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On November 22, 2025, a Singapore Airlines Scoot flight, TR939, traveling from Hong Kong to Singapore, encountered a serious incident when a passenger's lithium-ion power bank overheated, igniting a small fire in the cabin. The flight departed Hong Kong at 5:48 pm and successfully landed at Changi Airport, Singapore, at 9:06 pm.

Scoot released a statement indicating that the rapid overheating of a rechargeable power bank led to the fire. The cabin crew responded immediately, using a combination of water and a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire swiftly. Their prompt action prevented any injuries among the 178 passengers and six crew members on board.

Passengers took to social media to recount their experience, noting a strong smell of burning as the aircraft approached landing. While some indicated that it took a short while for crew members to fully quell the blaze, many commended the crew's professionalism and calm demeanor amid the situation. Emergency response teams waited on standby upon landing, but thankfully, no further complications occurred.

Scoot issued an apology for the disruption and highlighted their commitment to passenger safety. The airline reiterated that customer safety remains their utmost priority. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers linked to lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in power banks, smartphones, and laptops.

Lithium-ion batteries can pose hazards due to their flammable electrolyte components. Damage, defects, or exposure to excessive heat can trigger an event known as “thermal runaway,” where the battery overheats uncontrollably. Such occurrences can lead to significant safety threats, especially in aircraft cabins.

In response to these inherent risks, global aviation authorities have tightened regulations on the handling and storage of lithium-ion batteries during flights. For instance, Hong Kong instituted a ban on using power banks and their storage in overhead bins as of April 2025. Airlines worldwide now recommend that passengers keep these devices in hand luggage and adhere to safety guidelines to minimize overheating risks.

This event on the Scoot flight emphasizes the necessity of adhering to safety protocols. The crew's swift response averted a potential crisis, underscoring the importance of responsible electronic device use while flying. Awareness and proper device handling can mitigate similar risks in the future.

Overall, the fire incident aboard Scoot flight TR939 was handled effectively, with no injuries reported. Nonetheless, it highlights the persistent safety challenges associated with lithium-ion batteries in aviation, prompting ongoing efforts by airlines and regulatory bodies to enhance passenger safety measures.
