The recent teaser for Salman Khan's forthcoming film, Battle of Galwan, has ignited criticism among certain Chinese media outlets. However, industry representatives in India assert that this backlash is unsurprising and not a cause for concern.
Released on December 27, the teaser showcases Salman Khan embodying a formidable character inspired by the 2020 clash in Galwan Valley between Indian and Chinese forces. In response to its debut, the Global Times, a Chinese tabloid, presented expert opinions suggesting that Bollywood films primarily serve entertainment purposes and cannot alter historical realities. Many users on Chinese social networks have also voiced their disapproval of the teaser.
Ashoke Pandit, Chief Advisor for the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), remarked that the negative response was anticipated. According to him, any film depicting the India-China Galwan confrontation was likely to evoke reaction from the Chinese side.
Pandit stressed that Indian creators have every right to narrate stories reflecting India's historical and contemporary experiences. He noted that addressing events such as the Galwan clash is entirely legitimate, insisting that repercussions will not hinder the film's debut or its box office success. He suggested that producers probably foresaw this reaction, given the sensitive nature of the topic involving China.
He further articulated that movies like Battle of Galwan serve to share India's perspective with the international audience. He believes that China has frequently posed challenges for India and supported entities counter to Indian interests, making it crucial for Indian cinema to present these narratives candidly. Pandit also emphasized that if the film resonates with viewers and is well-executed, it will achieve success, regardless of external criticism.
Battle of Galwan, helmed by director Apoorva Lakhia, draws inspiration from the book India’s Most Fearless 3. The film revisits the fierce encounter that unfolded in June 2020 in eastern Ladakh, where Indian and Chinese troops engaged in extreme conditions utilizing sticks and stones, as firearms were not permitted. This confrontation tragically led to the death of Indian Army officer Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu among other soldiers.
Salman Khan is said to portray a character inspired by Colonel Santosh Babu, with Chitrangda Singh also featuring in the film. The narrative focuses on themes of valor, sacrifice, and the stark realities faced by soldiers stationed in high-altitude borders.
The ongoing discourse surrounding Battle of Galwan has captured considerable attention, reflecting an enduring sensitivity towards the historical events, exemplified by the strong reactions from the film industry.
