Saudi Biennial of Contemporary Art Opens at SAMoCA in Diriyah

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Museums Commission inaugurated the fourth Saudi edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South (BIENALSUR) at the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMoCA) in JAX District, Diriyah. Held under the theme “Let’s Play: A Labyrinth of Options,” the event aims to strengthen cultural dialogue between the Kingdom and the world through contemporary art. The exhibition runs until December 31, 2025, featuring 26 artists from inside and outside Saudi Arabia under the supervision of BIENALSUR Artistic Director Diana Wechsler.

Global Reach and Significance

This year’s edition marks the 10th anniversary of BIENALSUR, which began at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF) in Buenos Aires with UNESCO support. Over the past decade, the biennial has expanded to more than 70 cities and 140 cultural institutions worldwide. The Saudi edition aligns with SAMoCA’s mission to empower local talents, encourage cultural exchange, and broaden access to contemporary art across the Kingdom.

Interactive and Immersive Experiences

Visitors experienced a variety of interactive artworks combining light, sound, and movement. The exhibition encourages reflections on choice, experimentation, and rediscovery. Art is presented as a space for play, contemplation, and human connection, offering an inspiring and dynamic experience that engages all participants.

Accompanying Artistic Programs

SAMoCA is also presenting two supporting artistic programs during BIENALSUR. The first, titled “SAFAR,” is a concert series running from November 12 to December 7, featuring international artists. Performances include the French band Bon Entendeur on October 28, Nigerian “Blufunk” artist Keziah Jones on November 12, and the duo Love and Revenge on December 8. A masterclass by artist Wael Kodeih will be held on December 7 as part of the accompanying training program.

Workshops and Discussions in MUNTADA

The second program, “MUNTADA,” runs from November 2 to 8, featuring workshops, advanced courses, panel discussions, and film screenings. Focused on “Focus on Image: Tools, Language, and Its Power,” it explores how images are created, interpreted, and shared in the modern era, providing learning and collaboration opportunities for participants.

Promoting Saudi Artists and International Presence

Through BIENALSUR, SAMoCA reinforces its role as a national platform for contemporary art and a bridge for creative exchange. The Museums Commission continues its commitment to supporting Saudi artists, promoting international recognition, and contributing to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals to build a thriving cultural society and sustainable creative economy.

Art and Culture in Saudi Vision 2030

The event highlights Saudi Arabia’s cultural openness and investment in the arts, emphasizing creativity, innovation, and cultural dialogue. By bringing global artists together with local talent, SAMoCA strengthens cultural exchange and contributes to the Kingdom’s growing international cultural presence, fostering a sustainable creative community.

The exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and masterclasses provide broad engagement for residents and visitors alike. This inclusive approach helps build appreciation for contemporary art, enriches cultural understanding, and supports the growth of Saudi Arabia’s creative industries, leaving a lasting cultural legacy for years to come.
