Sehwag Delights in South Indian Cinema Post-Career, Laughs About Being Free

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag recently expressed his affection for South Indian films at an event in Hyderabad. He was there for the launch of the Tollywood Pro League (TPL), an initiative merging cricket and the Telugu film industry.

During the occasion, Sehwag praised notable stars like Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, and Prabhas. “Mahesh Babu is my favorite Telugu star. I also enjoy Allu Arjun, Prabhas... I’ve seen Baahubali several times. Now that I’m retired, I have a lot of spare time,” he joked.

Though he relishes South Indian movies, Sehwag opts for Hindi versions due to his unfamiliarity with Tamil and Telugu. He even humorously recalled a line from Pushpa, “saala jhukega nahi” (I won’t back down), and mimicked it in Telugu with help from host Nikhil.

The TPL launch was spearheaded by producer Dil Raju and graced by cricket icons Kapil Dev and Suresh Raina.

Sehwag’s remarks emphasize his appreciation for leading figures in Telugu cinema. Mahesh Babu recently featured in Guntur Kaaram (2024) and is currently filming for SS Rajamouli’s upcoming movie Varanasi, alongside Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Allu Arjun has gained fame through his roles in Pushpa: The Rise (2021) and the upcoming Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), which ranks among the highest-grossing Telugu films. He is now involved in a new project directed by Atlee, starring Deepika Padukone. Prabhas, celebrated for his work in Kalki 2898 AD (2024), which grossed over ₹1,042 crore globally, is also gearing up for multiple films including The Raja Saab, Spirit, and Fauzi.

Sehwag's enthusiasm for films showcases a vibrant and entertaining aspect of his personality, indicating that he enjoys the pleasures of life through cinema even post-retirement from professional cricket.
