Shai Hope Ends Eight-Year Wait With Brilliant Test Century

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

West Indies cricketer Shai Hope finally ended his long wait for a Test century after eight years, scoring a brilliant 103 runs off 214 balls in the fourth Test against India in Delhi. This special innings marked Hope’s first Test hundred since 2017 and brought back memories of his early promise as one of West Indies’ most stylish and composed batsmen. His effort came at a crucial time when his team was struggling, helping West Indies reach a respectable total and keeping them alive in the match.

A Calm And Composed Innings Under Pressure

Coming in to bat at number four, Hope showed great patience and concentration on a pitch that was not easy for batting. He built his innings slowly, leaving balls outside off stump and punishing the loose deliveries. His technique and temperament stood out as he handled India’s strong pace and spin attack with maturity. Despite losing early wickets, Hope anchored the innings and made sure the West Indies batting did not collapse under pressure.

Record Partnership With John Campbell

Hope shared a memorable 177-run partnership with opener John Campbell for the third wicket. The pair rebuilt the innings after the early dismissals and frustrated the Indian bowlers with their solid defense and timely stroke play. Campbell’s confident 87-run knock complemented Hope’s steady batting, and together they guided West Indies to a strong total of 390 runs. Their partnership is now being regarded as one of the most crucial stands for West Indies in recent Test history.

Creating History For The West Indies

Shai Hope’s latest century has also placed him in the record books. He now holds the record for playing the most innings between two centuries for West Indies in Test cricket — an incredible 58 innings between his second and third centuries. This surpasses former West Indies legends like Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Jermaine Blackwood. For comparison, Blackwood waited 47 innings, Gayle 46, and Chanderpaul 41 between hundreds. Hope’s achievement reflects his determination to make a strong comeback to the Test side after a long absence.

Return To The Test Arena

Hope had been out of the Test team for four years before making a comeback for the series against Australia. His inclusion for the India series showed the selectors’ renewed faith in his ability, and he justified their trust with this exceptional knock. Fans and experts praised his focus and discipline, saying this innings could be a turning point in his Test career. His ability to bat for long hours and handle pressure will be crucial as West Indies look to rebuild their Test side.

Hope’s Innings Inspires Team Effort

After Hope’s dismissal in the 84th over, other West Indies players continued to build on his strong foundation. Justin Greaves played a crucial role with an unbeaten 50 off 85 balls, while Jayden Seales contributed 32 runs in a remarkable 79-run partnership for the 10th wicket. Their partnership lasted 22 overs, frustrating the Indian bowlers and pushing West Indies to a competitive total. Jasprit Bumrah finally ended the stand in the 119th over, but by then, West Indies had gained vital momentum.

India’s Chase Under Control

In reply, India began their chase of 121 runs confidently under the leadership of Shubman Gill. They ended the day with nine wickets in hand and looked set for victory. Unless a dramatic batting collapse occurs, India are on course to win the series 2-0. Historically, India have never lost a Test match after enforcing a follow-on, and that record looks likely to remain intact.

A New Chapter For Shai Hope

For Shai Hope, this century means more than just runs on the board — it symbolizes redemption, patience, and resilience. After facing years of criticism and uncertainty, his return to form in the Test arena has reignited hopes for West Indies cricket. His calm leadership, combined with experience from limited-overs formats, is expected to inspire the next generation of Caribbean cricketers.
