Sharjah Champions Amicable Dispute Resolution at Book Fair Forum

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Sharjah is making significant progress in advancing restorative justice and fostering community reconciliation. A pivotal dialogue session named “Dispute Resolution in Sharjah: New Horizons for Amicable Solutions and Sustainable Justice” was held at Expo Centre Sharjah on Wednesday, as part of the 2025 Sharjah International Book Fair. The event gathered judicial leaders, law enforcement officials, and experts to discuss effective strategies for resolving conflicts without resorting to legal action.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Judicial Council, emphasized the vital role of conflict resolution in bolstering social unity. He stressed that taking proactive steps to resolve disputes not only supports family integrity but also nurtures tolerance and upholds societal harmony. Citing the “Direct Line” initiative, His Highness advocated for programs that enhance community awareness on amicable resolutions, highlighting the significance of avoiding litigation where feasible.

Judicial leaders presented insights regarding Sharjah’s enhanced restorative justice framework. Judge Dr Mohammed Obaid Al Kaabi, head of the Judicial Department, highlighted reforms designed to harmonize justice with reconciliation. Key initiatives include the Alimony Fund to alleviate family conflicts and agreements focusing on ethical family responsibilities. These efforts aim to deliver structured, non-litigious solutions while reinforcing community values.

Counselor Dr Salah Al Hammadi, head of Prosecution, underscored the significance of mediation and family-centered programs for reconciliation. Through initiatives like online complaint waivers and promotion of early conflict resolution, the Public Prosecution seeks to ease court burdens while ensuring equitable outcomes for all involved. This strategy is in line with the UAE declaring 2026 as the Year of the Family, reflecting governmental priorities in family support and communal peace.

Brigadier Dr Mohammed Khamis Al Othmani, Director of the Sharjah Police Sciences Academy, pointed out that community policing is essential to Sharjah’s restorative justice approach. Advocating the mantra “Reconciliation before Litigation,” he highlighted that trained professionals mediate disputes, enhance family connections, and cooperate with governmental and charitable bodies to uphold a secure and inclusive society.

The dialogue also incorporated international insights, with Dr Emad El-Din Hussein discussing advancements in mediation globally. His observations emphasized the social and economic advantages of reconciliation, illustrating that restorative justice is a pragmatic and strategic pathway to fostering stability within communities.

The session culminated with His Highness receiving accolades and publications from members of the judiciary, underscoring the emirate’s dedication to knowledge-sharing and progressive advancements in legal practices.

Sharjah’s comprehensive strategies unifying judiciary, law enforcement, and community entities showcase a forward-thinking model of restorative justice—prioritizing understanding, reconciliation, and social cohesion.
