Indian music composer Shashwat Sachdev is excited about one of his most significant partnerships yet—joining forces with Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard for the upcoming British crime thriller, Virdee.
While discussing this collaboration, Shashwat expressed, “Certain collaborations feel like fate manifesting through sound. When the vision is authentic, the right collaborators arrive. For me, this journey has been defined by honesty, curiosity, and profound respect for Hans and James.”
Renowned for his impressive scores in Uri: The Surgical Strike and the recent series The Ba**s of Bollywood*, Shashwat is now crafting the title theme for the British show Virdee, which depicts detective Staz Nair's quest to catch a killer targeting the Asian community in Bradford.
On his artistic approach, Shashwat stated, “My music inherently encompasses elements of Rajasthan dust, Bombay rain, and a lot of emotion. When that essence resonates within the cinematic realm, genuine connections are formed. These moments aren't pursued; they discover you when you're prepared. I've realized that music exists in the space between ego and silence—that's where true enchantment occurs.”
The composer characterized the partnership as a culturally enriching journey filled with deep emotion. “From Mumbai to Los Angeles, the heartbeat remains the same. This collaboration embodied humility, pride, and depth, reminding us that music is not engineered; it's cherished,” he remarked.
Describing himself as “a gypsy soul traversing various cultures and nations,” Shashwat added, “Working with Hans and James opened a breathtaking world for me.”
Virdee, based on A A Dhand's own Bradford-set crime novels, features a predominantly British-Asian cast and delves into themes of identity, justice, and community.
This project signifies a remarkable milestone for Shashwat Sachdev, merging his traditional Indian musical influences with global cinematic narratives.
Hans Zimmer, lauded for legendary scores such as Inception and The Dark Knight, has previously collaborated with Indian musicians and is anticipated to work with A R Rahman on Nitesh Tiwari’s epic two-part film Ramayana.
Through Virdee, Shashwat Sachdev continues to broaden his international presence, exemplifying the evolving connection between Indian artistry and global cinema.
