Sheikh Hazza Engages with Khalifa University on Research Initiatives

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Ain Region, met with a delegation from Khalifa University of Science and Technology, headed by President Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, to evaluate the university's advancements in scientific research and technology.

The discussion encompassed a variety of ongoing research projects and innovation strategies from the university's three colleges and 14 specialized research centers. Updates were shared from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the College of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, alongside insights from the Cybersecurity Academy and the Khalifa University Center for Experiential Learning and Clinical Simulation.

The delegation underscored recent advancements in satellite-based remote sensing technologies, alongside artificial intelligence and machine learning systems brought forth by the Environmental and Geophysical Sciences (ENGEOS) Laboratory.

Researchers detailed how these sophisticated technologies can detect and analyze underground features with remarkable precision, eliminating the need for direct surveys. Applications include identifying buried archaeological sites, hidden groundwater reserves, and geological structures.

Officials noted that these research methods have already been effectively implemented across the UAE, including at UNESCO World Heritage sites within the Al Ain Region.

Additionally, the delegation showcased the ENGEOS laboratory’s ground-penetrating radar system, which consists of 20 specialized instruments set up at Khalifa University campuses. These systems empower field validation and scientific analysis spanning numerous environmental and geological investigations.

The delegation affirmed that the technology stands poised for broader application throughout the Middle East and North Africa, with potential uses in weather risk forecasting, flood probability evaluation, and emergency preparedness efforts.

The delegation expressed gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his gracious reception and commended the UAE leadership for its unwavering support of scientific research, innovation, and higher education.

Khalifa University reiterated its dedication to enhancing research capabilities and forging both national and international partnerships to realize the UAE’s aspirations of becoming a global leader in advanced technology, science, and a knowledge-driven economy.

Attending the meeting were Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Professor Bayan Sharif, the Provost of Khalifa University, Samar Al Mansoori, Senior Vice-President for Support Services, along with several faculty and administrative leaders.
