World number two Jannik Sinner continued his strong run at the Miami Open, defeating American Alex Michelsen 7-5, 7-6(4) on Tuesday to book his place in the quarter-finals.
Sinner started well and managed to win a closely contested first set. However, the second set proved more challenging as Michelsen stepped up his game and took a 5-2 lead. The Italian showed great composure under pressure, making a strong comeback to level the set and force a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, Sinner stayed calm and used his powerful serve effectively to seal the match in straight sets. With this victory, he maintained his unbeaten record against Michelsen.
The win also extended Sinner’s remarkable record of consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 events to 28, highlighting his consistent top-level performance.
After the match, Sinner said his serve played a key role, especially during crucial moments. He also admitted that he needs to improve his baseline game to go further in the tournament.
This victory marks Sinner’s 20th quarter-final appearance at the Masters 1000 level. He is now aiming for a rare “Sunshine Double” after winning the Indian Wells title earlier this month without dropping a set.
If he succeeds, Sinner could become the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win both major US hard court Masters titles in the same season.
