The supernatural thriller “Sinners” delivered one of the biggest surprises of the awards season after winning the top ensemble honour at the Actor Awards on Sunday night, strengthening its position in the race for the upcoming Academy Awards.
The film took home the Actor Award for Best Movie Cast, a prize considered one of the most influential indicators ahead of the Oscars because it is voted on by members of the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union. Actors make up the largest voting bloc within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, making the recognition particularly significant in the final stretch before the Oscars ceremony scheduled for March 15.
Veteran actor Delroy Lindo accepted the award on behalf of the cast during the ceremony in Los Angeles. Standing alongside his fellow performers, Lindo reflected on the dedication behind the film’s production.
“Every single day we brought ourselves, we brought our hearts, we brought our souls and our spirits to this endeavor,” he told the audience. “To be recognized by you all — thank you does not even begin to encompass the gratitude that we feel.”
Released by Warner Bros., “Sinners” tells the story of twin brothers who open a juke joint in the racially segregated American South. Their venture takes a dark turn when a mysterious vampire begins haunting the community. The film blends supernatural horror with themes rooted in blues music, heritage and Black cultural identity.
The film’s lead star Michael B. Jordan, who portrays both brothers Smoke and Stack, also secured the Best Film Actor award for his dual performance. Accepting the honour, Jordan acknowledged the competition and the journey that brought him to the stage.
“This ride has been unbelievable,” he said. “I thank everyone for welcoming me in and making me feel seen.”
Jordan’s fellow nominees included Timothée Chalamet for his role in Marty Supreme and Leonardo DiCaprio for his performance in One Battle After Another.
Despite Sinners emerging as a strong contender, “One Battle After Another” continues to dominate the broader awards circuit. The film — centered on a former revolutionary struggling to save his daughter’s life — has collected several major prizes this season and recently won the top honour at the Producers Guild Awards, a distinction that historically aligns closely with the eventual Best Picture winner at the Oscars.
In supporting categories at the Actor Awards, Sean Penn was recognized for his performance in One Battle After Another. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley claimed Best Actress for portraying Agnes Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, in the historical drama Hamnet. Amy Madigan received Best Supporting Actress for her eccentric role as Aunt Gladys in the horror film Weapons.
Television categories also produced notable winners. The Hollywood satire “The Studio” won Best Cast in a TV Comedy, while “The Pitt” secured the award for Best Cast in a TV Drama.
The late Catherine O’Hara was posthumously honoured as Best Female Actor in a Television Comedy for her role as a film producer in The Studio. Writer and co-star Seth Rogen accepted the award on her behalf, recalling how she frequently suggested thoughtful script revisions.
“She would send the kindest emails suggesting changes to her scenes,” Rogen said. “And somehow every idea made the show better. It proved you can be a genius and still be incredibly kind.”
The evening also celebrated a lifetime of achievements in film and television as Harrison Ford received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 83-year-old actor reflected on his decades-long career with humour and gratitude.
“I guess my career is about halfway through,” Ford joked, drawing laughter from the crowd.
He added that acting helped him find a sense of belonging in an industry that once seemed intimidating.
“People I once thought were misfits and geeks turned out to be my people,” Ford said. “I’m a lucky guy — lucky to have found work that challenges me and lucky to still be doing it.”
With the Actor Awards now concluded, attention shifts to the Oscars, where the momentum from Sinners and the consistent dominance of One Battle After Another are expected to make the Best Picture race one of the closest in recent years.
