Six members of the Pakistan Army, among them Captain Noman Saleem, were killed in a heavy gunbattle with Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported on Wednesday. The episode underlines mounting security pressures in the border region after the TTP abandoned a 2022 ceasefire.
The encounter took place during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Dogar area, a location frequently linked to cross-border militant movements. The ISPR said the operation targeted militants labelled Fitna al-Khawarij by the military, and that seven militants were killed in the confrontation.
The military named the fallen officer as Captain Noman Saleem, a 24-year-old medical officer from Mianwali, saying he fought bravely and attained shahadat alongside five comrades. The other deceased troops were listed as Havaldar Amjad Ali (39) of Swabi, Naik Waqas Ahmad (36) of Rawalpindi, Sepoy Aijaz Ali (23) of Shikarpur, Sepoy Muhammad Waleed (23) of Jhelum, and Sepoy Muhammad Shahbaz (32) of Khairpur.
Security units immediately began a sanitisation sweep of the area to confirm no militants remained. The ISPR reiterated Pakistan’s resolve under the Azm-e-Istehkam counterterrorism campaign, saying operations to remove foreign-backed and domestic terrorist elements will continue without pause.
Kurram, which borders Afghanistan, has long been a gateway for militant infiltration and attacks on security forces. Provincial Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) data shows 298 people have been killed in terrorist incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa so far this year. Authorities state they have carried out 2,366 intelligence-driven operations, detained 1,124 suspects designated as militants and killed 368 terrorists in encounters, while 6,181 individuals have been charged in terrorism-related cases.
Officials have also stepped up actions against extortion networks, registering 1,287 cases, filing charges against 209 suspects and arresting 52 individuals as part of ongoing enforcement drives.
The deadly firefight in Kurram underscores the enduring threat from the TTP in northern Pakistan and the continuing toll on security personnel and local communities as authorities press counterterrorism efforts.
