Small Earthquake Swarm Hits San Francisco Bay Area, No Damage Reported

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The San Francisco Bay Area experienced a brief scare early Sunday as a swarm of minor earthquakes hit the region, underscoring its seismic nature. Fortunately, there were no injuries or property damage reported, as confirmed by local authorities.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded at least eight tremors between 9:38 am and 9:41 am, with the epicenter located southeast of San Ramon, about 25-30 miles east of San Francisco. The largest quake registered a magnitude of 3.8, while the remaining tremors varied between 2.5 and 3.7 on the Richter scale.

Residents from San Ramon, Dublin, and Emeryville felt the instances of shaking and described them as a “quick, rolling motion.” Emergency responders reassured the community that no injuries occurred and that property remained unaffected.

Typically, earthquakes measuring above 2.5 can be felt by those close to the epicenter yet seldom cause structural damage. The Bay Area is situated along the Calaveras and Hayward fault lines, both notorious for frequent minor seismic events. This latest swarm follows a spike in seismic activity experienced in September and October, when minor quakes occurred around Berkeley and nearby towns.

Experts emphasize that although the latest tremors were minor, they highlight the significance of being prepared for earthquakes in this active region. Authorities will keep a close watch on seismic developments and encourage residents to stay updated and adhere to safety protocols for any significant future quakes.
