Sonam Bajwa on Gurpurab: childhood traditions and filming through festivals

Post by : Meena Hassan

Actor Sonam Bajwa, a familiar face in Punjabi cinema noted for the Carry On Jatta films and Godday Godday Chaa (2023), spoke about her personal bond with Gurpurab, the celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth.

Although she has not lived in Punjab, Sonam says the festival has long been meaningful to her. She explains she was born in Uttarakhand and grew up in Uttar Pradesh with her grandparents nearby, and that memories of attending Prabhat Pheris each Guru Nanak Jayanti remain vivid.

The 36-year-old remembers the excitement of those days. She looked forward to Kada Prasad, boondi and laddoos, and though it was a school holiday, the family would join prayers and festive processions, she says, recalling the joy of the celebrations.

Sonam also credits the religious atmosphere at home to her mother. “My mother is an amritdhari and still does sewa,” she notes, adding that she was raised in that environment even if she does not clearly recall performing sewa herself.

One lasting memory is the langar: Sonam loved the traditional kaali daal and phulka, and observes that recreating the same dish at home never quite matches the flavour of the communal meal.

Work commitments have changed how she marks festivals. Since breaking into Bollywood with projects such as Baaghi 4, Housefull 5 and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat this year, she often finds herself working on holidays. She adds that celebrations feel different without her parents around and that she will be shooting in Punjab on Gurpurab this year.
