Victor Wembanyama continued his strong early-season form as he led the San Antonio Spurs to a 107-101 victory over the Miami Heat on Thursday night. Playing in front of home fans, Wembanyama dominated with 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks, showing his all-around talent on both ends of the court. His performance helped the Spurs extend their winning streak to five games, their best start to a season in franchise history.
The match was a thrilling contest between one of the league’s best defensive teams and the top offensive team. The Spurs, who entered the game with the NBA’s best scoring defense at just 104.5 points allowed per game, faced off against a Miami side that had been averaging 131.5 points per game. The result proved San Antonio’s defense could stop even the strongest attacks, as they held Miami to just 43.3 percent shooting from the field.
The game started with Miami shooting the ball efficiently, making 63.2 percent of their shots in the first quarter. However, the Heat’s seven turnovers allowed the Spurs to end the period on a 10-2 run, leading 33-31. San Antonio’s defensive pressure and fast transition play made the difference early. Despite being outshot, their discipline and teamwork on defense helped them stay ahead throughout the game.
At halftime, the Spurs led 59-58 after another late surge. Wembanyama had 14 points and nine rebounds by the break, while Miami’s Bam Adebayo led all scorers with 17 points and six rebounds. The second quarter featured an exciting stretch of action that saw three dunks in quick succession—two by Wembanyama and one by Adebayo—energizing both teams and the crowd.
The Spurs came out strong in the third quarter, quickly building a 69-60 lead and forcing a Miami timeout. Their energy and defensive organization frustrated Miami’s scorers. By the end of the third quarter, San Antonio had a 15-point cushion at 87-72, looking well in control of the game.
The Heat refused to give up, starting the fourth quarter with a massive 17-1 run that gave them an 89-88 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. Miami’s comeback showed their fighting spirit, but the Spurs responded calmly. A timeout by San Antonio helped them regain their rhythm, and Wembanyama, along with Stephon Castle, guided the team to finish the game strong.
Stephon Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year, had another impressive outing for the Spurs, contributing 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and four steals. His energy and passing helped the Spurs regain control late in the game. Bam Adebayo was the standout performer for Miami, scoring a game-high 31 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Andrew Wiggins also chipped in with 24 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome San Antonio’s balanced play.
San Antonio’s advantage came from their efficiency at the free-throw line and in transition. The Spurs outscored Miami 17-8 at the foul line and 18-9 on fast-break points. Their aggressive approach on both ends of the floor paid off, especially during key moments late in the fourth quarter when they needed to secure the win.
Both teams were missing key players due to injuries. The Spurs played without All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox, as well as Luke Kornet, Jeremy Sochan, and former Miami player Kelly Olynyk. The Heat were without their top scorer from last season, Tyler Herro, their leading scorer this season, Norman Powell, and rookie first-round pick Kasparas Jakucionis. Despite these absences, both teams played at a high level.
With this win, San Antonio improved to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. Head coach Gregg Popovich praised the team’s discipline and teamwork after the match, noting that the squad’s balance and chemistry have been key to their success. The Spurs’ combination of young talent, strong defense, and unselfish play has made them one of the early surprises of the season.
The Spurs will look to maintain their unbeaten run as they prepare for their next matchup, while the Heat will aim to bounce back after a hard-fought loss. For San Antonio fans, the excitement surrounding Wembanyama’s leadership and Castle’s development continues to grow, signaling a promising future for the franchise.
