Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Nepal prime minister Jhalanath Khanal, has been flown to India for advanced medical treatment. She suffered serious burn injuries after violent protests broke out in Kathmandu, highlighting the dangers of rising unrest in the country.
Incident During Gen Z Protests
The injuries happened on September 9 when protesters set fire to Khanal’s residence in the Dallu area of Kathmandu. The violence occurred during the ongoing ‘Gen Z’ demonstrations. The protests turned destructive, damaging property and injuring several people, including Chitrakar. Authorities are still investigating the causes and impacts of the unrest.
Initial Treatment In Nepal
After the incident, Chitrakar was rushed to the Burn Hospital in Kirtipur. Doctors there confirmed she suffered burns on about 15 percent of her body. The hospital staff gave her emergency care and worked to stabilize her condition before further treatment decisions were made.
Health Complications From Burns
Chitrakar’s injuries were severe, especially to her left hand, which was badly damaged. She also developed breathing problems due to smoke inhalation, which caused a chest infection. Her family said these complications made it clear that she needed advanced care that was not fully available in Nepal.
Transfer To India For Care
On the advice of her doctors, Chitrakar was transported to New Delhi for further treatment. The decision was taken due to the seriousness of her injuries and the need for advanced medical facilities. Her family and the medical team coordinated the move to ensure she got immediate specialized treatment.
Role Of Burn Hospital In Kirtipur
Doctors at the Burn Hospital in Kirtipur played a key role in saving Chitrakar’s life immediately after the attack. They treated her burns and respiratory issues in the first critical hours. Their work stabilized her enough for her safe transfer abroad.
Profile Of Jhalanath Khanal
Jhalanath Khanal, Chitrakar’s husband, served as Nepal’s prime minister from February to August 2011. He is a senior political leader and an important figure in Nepal’s history. The attack on his family has drawn public attention to the risks faced by high-profile figures during violent protests.
Broader Concerns Over Protest Violence
The violent incident at Khanal’s residence is not an isolated case. It reflects the growing dangers linked to the ‘Gen Z’ protests in Nepal. Many citizens and officials are worried about safety during demonstrations and the ability of emergency services to respond. The need to send Chitrakar abroad for treatment also shows the limits of Nepal’s healthcare system in handling complex injuries caused by such unrest.
