Tragic Explosion in Srinagar Claims 9 Lives and Injures 29

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A disastrous incident unfolded in Srinagar on Friday night when a routine forensic examination escalated into tragedy as seized explosives detonated within the Nowgam police station. The explosion resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals and injured 29 others, causing widespread panic as residents fled their homes.

The blast occurred during an inspection by forensic specialists and law enforcement, who were evaluating recently seized explosive materials tied to several ongoing investigations. Among the fatalities were police officers and forensic personnel present at the scene, along with two officials from the Srinagar administration. As several victims sustained critical injuries, there are concerns that the death toll could increase.

The force of the explosion was significant, resulting in parts of the building being destroyed and debris scattered hundreds of meters away. Some remains were burned beyond recognition, with body parts reportedly found as far as 200 meters from the police station. Residents described the event as a deafening blast followed by tremors strong enough to shatter glass and shake surrounding structures.

Authorities affirmed that the incident was not a terrorist attack. Officials clarified that the explosion occurred during an internal investigation of explosive materials stored at the police station. A senior journalist, confirming police reports, labeled it a “tragic incident” stemming from procedural examination, segregated from militant actions.

This calamity occurs amid heightened security in India after a recent car explosion in New Delhi, which claimed at least 12 lives near the Red Fort and was classified as a terror attack. In response, Kashmir authorities initiated a sweeping crackdown, detaining over 650 individuals believed to be connected to extremist factions. Investigations revealed many had ties to Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, known for terror affiliations in the area.

The Nowgam police station has been under scrutiny due to multiple investigations, including one related to threatening posters attributed to JeM. This inquiry uncovered what officials characterized as a “white-collar terror network” involving radicalized professionals and students with international handlers. Authorities also seized nearly 3,000 kg of explosive materials, triggering alarm over a potential planned attack.

The explosion underscores the precarious security landscape in Kashmir, a region long contested between India and Pakistan. Despite ongoing crackdowns, the region continues to face incidents involving explosives and militant actions.

Following the blast, authorities have cordoned off the police station and initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain what triggered the explosion and whether safety protocols were adequately followed during the handling of the explosives. Further developments are anticipated as the inquiry continues, with officials dedicated to preventing any recurrence of such an incident.
