At the G20 summit in South Africa, Ukraine’s allies are gathering to discuss how to enhance a US-brokered peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict with Russia. This meeting comes on the heels of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s warning that Ukraine confronts “one of the most challenging times in our history” as pressures mount to accept a plan perceived as beneficial to Moscow.
On Friday, President Zelensky engaged in phone discussions with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and leaders from France and Germany. Starmer affirmed that Ukraine’s international partners remain dedicated to achieving a “lasting peace once and for all.”
Notably, neither US President Donald Trump nor Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate in the G20 summit.
Details of the US Peace Proposal
Leaked details of the US plan include propositions that Ukraine had initially dismissed, such as relinquishing control over certain eastern territories, downsizing its military, and refraining from joining NATO—demands long pursued by Russia.
Recent visits by senior US military officials to Kyiv focused on discussing the proposal with Ukrainian leaders. While Washington urges quick acceptance, some European leaders express concerns that the plan disproportionately caters to Moscow. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas labeled the potential acceptance of the plan a “very dangerous moment,” stressing that “decisions regarding any agreement rest with Ukraine.”
Agenda at the G20 Summit
In preparation for the summit, Sir Keir Starmer indicated that global leaders would review the current proposal and discuss avenues to fortify the framework for upcoming negotiations. “Ukraine has been poised to negotiate for months, while Russia has delayed and continued its violent actions,” he remarked. “Collaboration with both the US and Ukraine is vital to secure an equitable and enduring peace.”
Trump’s Ultimatum to Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has cautioned that if Ukraine does not endorse the plan, it risks losing additional territory to Russia. He has set a deadline of Thanksgiving for Kyiv to respond, deeming it an “appropriate” time for a decision.
This situation underscores the increasing international tension as Ukraine considers the US peace initiative while striving to safeguard its sovereignty and alliances across Europe.
