Super Typhoon Fung-Wong Strikes Philippines: More than 1 Million Evacuated

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Manila, Philippines: Over a million people have been evacuated in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Fung-Wong approaches the eastern coast, bringing heavy rains, fierce winds, and a looming risk of severe flooding. Ahead of the storm’s arrival, at least one fatality has been reported.

The formidable typhoon is predicted to make landfall in Aurora province between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM on Sunday, closely following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which led to more than 220 fatalities just days prior. With its expansive reach affecting nearly the entire archipelago, Fung-Wong is expected to bring intense rainfall and strong winds across Luzon and the central regions.

Officials have raised the highest level of storm warnings, advising residents from low-lying and coastal areas to evacuate to safer locations. “We are confronted with a highly significant storm,” stated Charmagne Varilla, a weather forecasting official, highlighting the escalated dangers posed by nighttime landfall.

The central region of Samar reported the first casualty—a 64-year-old woman trapped beneath debris while trying to escape her home amid severe weather conditions.

In preparation for the hurricane’s impact, residents in Aurora have been securing windows and reinforcing rooftops. “What truly concerns us is that the landfall will occur at night, making visibility a challenge,” mentioned Aries Ora, a local government representative.

Schools and government offices will be closed on Monday, with nearly 300 domestic and international flights grounded due to safety precautions.

Earlier on Sunday, Catanduanes experienced the initial force of the storm, with storm surges overwhelming seawalls and floodwaters sweeping over neighborhoods. Locals described winds strong enough to “shake the ground.”

Footage from Albay province revealed streets transformed into torrents, while disaster officials confirmed that almost 1.2 million individuals have been preemptively evacuated nationwide.

Meteorologists caution that many regions could experience over 200 millimeters of rainfall, which may lead to landslides and flash floods. The weather bureau has urged constant vigilance as the storm advances inland overnight.

Experts correlate the rising frequency and intensity of typhoons like Fung-Wong to climate change, noting that elevated ocean and air temperatures are intensifying tropical storms.

In a statement, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) declared that emergency teams have been mobilized across Luzon and Visayas, with rescue tools and relief supplies staged in strategic locations.

As the nation prepares for another night of severe weather, communities remain hopeful that their precautionary measures will help reduce loss of life and property.
