A significant political change is unfolding in West Bengal as Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party prepares to assume the role of Chief Minister, following the party’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP secured 207 seats out of 294, breaking the Trinamool Congress's long-standing dominance in the region and marking a watershed moment for the BJP's influence in eastern India.
During a meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, newly elected BJP MLAs unanimously selected Suvendu as their legislative leader, establishing a clear path for him to form the new government. Amit Shah noted that all proposals from the meeting reflected unanimous support for Adhikari.
Adhikari, along with senior BJP officials such as Dilip Ghosh and Locket Chatterjee, later visited the Lok Bhavan in Kolkata. He met with Governor R.N. Ravi to formally stake his claim to form a government, with expectations that the Governor will extend an official invitation for the BJP to establish the new administration.
The swearing-in ceremony is set to occur at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Saturday, drawing a lineup of prominent BJP leaders, Union ministers, and chief ministers from NDA-governed states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Amit Shah are also anticipated to attend, branding this occasion as a monumental political event in West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari’s ascent to Chief Minister represents a marked shift in Bengal’s political arena. Previously a prominent figure in the Trinamool Congress, he switched to the BJP prior to the 2021 elections, and gained significant attention by defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram—a victory that bolstered his standing within the BJP.
The BJP's overwhelming electoral success is igniting political discussions nationwide, with analysts suggesting that this could reshape eastern India’s political dynamics and further solidify the party’s foothold on the national stage. The Trinamool Congress, which won 80 seats, faced a major electoral defeat after over a decade of governance in the state.
In anticipation of the oath-taking ceremony, security measures have been enhanced across Kolkata, as thousands of BJP supporters are expected to gather at the Brigade Parade Ground. This event is poised to be one of the most pivotal political transitions in West Bengal's recent history, with Suvendu Adhikari gearing up to lead the state's inaugural BJP government since gaining independence.
