Sydney Sweeney Responds to Backlash Over American Eagle Jeans Ad

Post by : Meena Hassan

Sydney Sweeney has commented on the uproar surrounding her American Eagle jeans commercial, which drew attention across the United States. The spot showed Sweeney modeling the brand's denim while making a play on words between "jeans" and "genes."

Some critics read the line as carrying racial implications, arguing it suggested a superiority tied to heredity. Others treated it as light marketing that focused on style and appearance rather than any ideological message.

Speaking in an interview, Sweeney said she took part in a jeans campaign and was surprised by the level of backlash. "I did a jean ad. The reaction surprised me, but I love jeans — I'm in them and a T-shirt almost every day," she said, calling a former president's praise of the ad "surreal."

The exchange also prompted debate about eugenics language. Sweeney noted that genes are inherited traits passed from parents to children and added a wry clarification about the ad: "My jeans are blue."

American Eagle moved to defuse the criticism, stating there was no racial intent behind the commercial: "We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone."

Regardless of the controversy, the advertisement raised the company's profile, contributing to stronger retail interest and a rise in sales and stock value—illustrating how contentious campaigns can generate commercial momentum.
