A tanker travelling through the Gulf of Aden off Yemen was reportedly boarded by six armed people who took control of the vessel, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, known as UKMTO.
UKMTO said the armed individuals diverted the tanker toward Somalia after taking control of the vessel. The incident adds to concerns over maritime security in one of the world's important shipping routes.
UKMTO initially received a report of an incident about 136 nautical miles east of Mukalla, Yemen. The tanker had been travelling west through the Gulf of Aden when its crew reported being approached by an unauthorised vessel.
The details of the incident remain limited, and it was not immediately clear who the armed individuals were or what their motive was. Maritime authorities are expected to monitor developments as more information becomes available.
The Gulf of Aden is a major maritime corridor connecting the Indian Ocean with the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Commercial vessels operating in the region have faced security concerns because of armed attacks, attempted boardings and other incidents.
Any forced diversion of a commercial tanker can raise concerns about crew safety, cargo security and shipping operations. Continued incidents in the region could also increase pressure on shipping companies to strengthen security measures or reconsider routes.
