A Texas teenager, Luke Garrett Resecker, has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for his involvement in a devastating crash in 2023 that resulted in the deaths of six members of an Indian-origin family. Resecker, who was only 17 at the time of the incident, was reportedly under the influence of THC when the tragic event occurred, authorities have confirmed.
The accident took place on December 26, 2023, at approximately 4:00 pm on US Highway 67, near County Road 1119, just south of Cleburne, Texas. The family was returning from a visit to the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose when Resecker’s Chevy Silverado veered into their lane while they were traveling in a Honda Odyssey minivan.
Of the seven passengers in the minivan, six lost their lives at the scene, including Rushil Barri (28) from Irving and five relatives from Georgia: Naveena Potabathula (36), Nageswararao Ponnada (64), Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada (60), 10-year-old Krithik Potabathula, and 9-year-old Nishidha Potabathula. Lokesh Potabathula, the only survivor, now faces paralysis and the emotional toll of losing his wife, children, cousin, and in-laws in the tragedy.
Preston Glass, Resecker’s 17-year-old passenger, also suffered severe traumatic brain injury, leaving him with significant cognitive impairments. Investigators found THC wax, a vape pen, and marijuana in Resecker’s vehicle, with toxicological reports confirming the presence of THC in his system at the time of the crash.
During the trial in Johnson County, prosecutors maintained that the incident was entirely avoidable, underscoring the significant risks associated with impaired driving. Assistant District Attorneys Connor Day and Stephanie Miller labeled it a poignant reminder of the grave outcomes stemming from reckless behavior on the road.
In her closing statements, Miller reiterated the names of the victims, asserting, “Justice for Rushil, Justice for Naveena, Justice for Nageswararao, Justice for Sitamahalakshmi, Justice for Krithik, Justice for Nishidha, and Justice for Lokesh as well as justice for this community.”
Resecker faced numerous charges, including intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, and drug possession. The sentencing marks a crucial step toward accountability in one of the most tragic traffic incidents related to impaired driving in the area.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the perilous consequences of drug-impaired driving, sending a message to teenagers and drivers across the nation about the dangers of operating a vehicle under the influence.
