One Killed, Two Injured in Tennessee Medical Helicopter Incident

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Saturday afternoon, a medical helicopter disaster in Tennessee tragically took the life of one crew member and left two others in critical condition. This incident unfolded east of Nashville, approximately 19 kilometers from the Music City Executive Airport, authorities disclosed.

The incident involved a Vanderbilt LifeFlight helicopter, specifically an Airbus EC130T2 from 2015, which crashed in a rural area between Lebanon and Gallatin at about 1:45 p.m. Fortunately, there were no patients onboard at the time of the accident.

Emergency responders from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office were quick to arrive, discovering one crew member deceased and the other two in severe condition. Both survivors were subsequently airlifted to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville for critical care.

Flight tracking services FlightAware and Flightradar24 report that the helicopter departed from the Sumner County Emergency Operations Centre at 1:33 p.m., remaining airborne for approximately eight minutes before the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding this incident. Preliminary findings suggest that no distress calls were made prior to the helicopter's descent.

In a statement, Vanderbilt LifeFlight conveyed their heartfelt condolences, stating, “Our hearts and deepest sympathies are with our LifeFlight colleagues, their families, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The Vanderbilt LifeFlight program has been an integral part of Tennessee's emergency response efforts for decades, delivering critical medical transport statewide. The crash serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by the medical aviation community in their life-saving missions.
