Recent military clashes have heightened tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border, as Thailand conducted air strikes in disagreement over land disputes. This escalation follows mutual accusations of ceasefire violations, mediated by former US President Donald Trump. The outbreak of conflict follows Thailand's recent suspension of de-escalation efforts last month, citing incidents involving new landmines that they claim injured a Thai soldier, a statement Cambodia disputes.
The military capabilities of the two Southeast Asian countries show significant disparity. Cambodia's defense budget for 2024 is approximately $1.3 billion, with an active military personnel count of 124,300. The force was created in 1993 through the integration of earlier military factions, and includes about 75,000 army soldiers along with 200 battle tanks and 480 artillery units. Cambodia's air force, while smaller with 1,500 personnel, operates various aircraft but lacks fighter jets. Meanwhile, its navy, comprising 2,800 personnel including 1,500 naval infantry, manages 13 patrol vessels and an amphibious landing craft.
In contrast, Thailand has been classified as a major non-NATO ally of the US and supports a significantly larger military apparatus. For 2024, its defense budget is set at $5.73 billion, maintaining over 360,000 active troops. The army alone consists of 245,000 personnel, including a conscription of 115,000, operating 400 battle tanks and an array of artillery pieces. Thailand also boasts an extensive range of its own aircraft, including Black Hawk helicopters and UAVs.
With one of Southeast Asia's most advanced air forces, Thailand fields approximately 46,000 personnel and 112 combat aircraft, including several F-16s and Gripen jets. Its navy outnumbers Cambodia’s, boasting nearly 70,000 personnel, and features a well-equipped fleet including an aircraft carrier and several frigates, supported by a marine corps of 23,000.
These border confrontations underline the longstanding enmities between the nations, revealing their military disparities and the persistent threat of escalation. Analysts observe that the region's security continues to be precarious, risking further incidents unless diplomatic dialogues succeed in restoring calm.
The military tensions between Thailand and Cambodia draw significant attention from neighboring countries, as shifts in power, budget allocations, and troop movements persistently reshape the dynamics at their border.
