Thailand is embarking on a transformative journey to bolster its cooperative sector, aligning with its strategic vision for 2026. Under the leadership of Deputy Minister Piyarat Tiyapairat, key discussions were held aimed at heightening the performance and sustainability of cooperatives nationwide.
During the session organized by the National Cooperative Development Committee, the emphasis was on establishing a robust, transparent, and sustainable cooperative framework. Various sector officials contributed insights and proposals that will shape upcoming policies and initiatives.
A significant focal point of the meeting was the integration of digital technologies. The government is set to enhance applications and websites, intending to make them user-friendly and widely accessible. The objective is to foster a system centered around user needs, allowing cooperative members to swiftly and efficiently access necessary services.
Additionally, the plan emphasizes improved data sharing between different government departments. By creating interconnected systems and promoting innovative practices, the government aims to elevate decision-making perspectives and service delivery outcomes. Partnerships with educational and research institutions will facilitate the development of novel technologies aligned with farmers' and cooperative members' preferences.
Debt management also emerged as a crucial agenda item. The government plans to provide assistance to numerous cooperative members in managing and decreasing their financial obligations, a measure anticipated to enhance financial stability and improve the overall well-being of many households.
This roadmap toward 2026 is anchored in the 5th Cooperative Development Plan spanning from 2023 to 2027. A significant number of initiatives under this framework have been successfully rolled out, witnessing solid progress towards achieving outlined objectives.
In the upcoming year, efforts will be directed toward fortifying underperforming cooperatives by enhancing management practices and fostering transparency. The implementation of technology for auditing and governance will enable improved accountability.
The initiative also seeks to promote ethical conduct among cooperative personnel and support thousands of cooperatives and agricultural groups. There will be efforts to inspire high-performing model cooperatives that other entities can emulate.
Currently, Thailand boasts over nine thousand cooperatives with a substantial membership base, particularly in agriculture. These cooperatives are pivotal to the nation's economy, significantly contributing to the national income through activities like lending, deposits, and agricultural services.
The meeting acknowledged the vital role of national cooperative federations in propelling the sector onward. Officials are optimistic that with effective governmental collaboration and innovative digital integration, the cooperative system will thrive and foster sustainable development in Thailand.
