Thailand Enhances Defence Industry Capacity

Post by : Shakul

Thailand’s Ministry of Defence is ramping up efforts to enhance the country’s military production capabilities and bolster the defence sector through ongoing research and development initiatives. Senior military representatives recently examined the Military Explosives Factory in Nakhon Sawan Province to evaluate production projects and assess technological advancements aimed at strengthening national security independence.

This inspection took place on May 15, 2026, led by General Tharaphong Malakham, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary General Sarun Petranon and other senior officials. The delegation assessed the Military Explosives Factory under the Department of Military Industry, Defence Industry, and Military Energy Center situated in Yan Matri Subdistrict, Phayuhakhiri District.

During the visit, officials reviewed the factory’s significant production initiatives, research activities, and planned expansions. The Ministry articulated that the core aim is to fortify Thailand’s defence manufacturing by enhancing the production technologies for explosives and propellants in line with international standards, thereby diminishing reliance on foreign imports.

The Military Explosives Factory is crucial for producing munitions, explosives, and military supplies for the Ministry of Defence, public agencies, and private sector clients domestically and abroad. Officials highlighted the facility’s role in research and product development to meet future defence industry demands.

As per the Ministry of Defence, the factory has the ability to produce tubular propellants that comply with both United States and NATO standards. Its annual output reaches 372 tons, comprising 300 tons of single-base propellant and 72 tons of twin-base propellant, operating continuously in three shifts to ensure production efficiency.

Additionally, the factory produces twin-base spherical propellant utilizing technology obtained from China's Norinco defense firm. This line can generate approximately 70 tons annually and marks a significant advancement in fortifying Thailand’s local military manufacturing capabilities.

During the inspection, General Tharaphong observed the processes involved in creating spherical propellant pellets, assembling munitions, and the factory’s maintenance programs. Updates were also provided on a collaborative research initiative with Kasetsart University aimed at developing local cotton varieties for nitrocellulose production, an essential raw material for military explosives.

The government anticipates that this project will help reduce Thailand's dependence on imported materials and build a more robust, self-sufficient defence industry. Officials stressed that enhancing local production capabilities is ever more critical as global security hurdles and geopolitical uncertainties loom larger.

As stated by the Ministry of Defence, future investments in military research, advanced manufacturing technology, and domestic raw material sourcing will be pivotal in shaping Thailand’s long-term national security strategy.
