Thailand Enhances Regional Flight Support

Post by : Shakul

Thailand is advancing its strategy to enhance flights to regional airports, aiming to invigorate local economies and promote tourism in lesser-known cities throughout the nation.

Deputy Minister of Transport Phatarapong Pataraprasit led a discussion with key aviation officials and the Thai Airlines Association regarding support initiatives for carriers operating at regional airports under the oversight of the Department of Airports.

Government officials expressed their intent to optimize the capabilities of airports situated in northern, northeastern, and southern Thailand, many of which have the capacity to accommodate increased passenger and flight volumes. Enhancing regional air connectivity is seen as vital for a more equitable distribution of tourism revenue nationwide.

During the discussions, Phatarapong encouraged airlines to introduce both new domestic and international routes, encompassing regular and charter flights. He noted that improved flight accessibility would not only facilitate travel for the public but also bolster economic expansion in smaller towns and provinces.

The Department of Airports referenced past successes from the aviation promotion measures rolled out in 2025. Several airlines, including Thai Lion Air, Thai Vietjet Air, and Thai AirAsia, initiated new routes spurred by these incentives, targeting cities like Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Buriram, and Narathiwat.

Authorities are contemplating the extension of these promotional initiatives and the provision of additional support for international routes. Plans were also discussed to enhance airport facilities and lower operational costs for airlines in order to stimulate higher passenger demand from both local and international travelers.

The meeting additionally examined the ramifications of the ongoing Middle East conflicts on the aviation sector. To assist airlines in addressing heightened operational challenges during this period, Airports of Thailand revealed a 50% cut in aircraft parking fees at its airports for a six-month period beginning June 1, 2026.

Officials affirmed the government's steadfast commitment to bolstering Thailand’s aviation industry while ensuring that air travel remains accessible and affordable, thus supporting tourism, trade, and regional economic growth.
