Thailand Enhances School Safety Ahead of New Academic Year

Post by : Shakul

In preparation for the upcoming academic year, Thailand is ramping up its nation-wide initiatives aimed at bolstering school safety and enhancing education quality. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's administration is collaborating with various agencies to elevate learning standards, upgrade school infrastructure, and ease the financial burden on families as the new school term approaches.

According to Deputy government spokesperson Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, most schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission are set to reopen on May 18, 2026, with some starting classes earlier, from May 14. Inspections are currently underway across schools to ensure that essential facilities such as electrical systems, classrooms, playgrounds, learning equipment, and teacher housing meet established safety criteria.

The Ministry of Education is actively conducting workshops to push forward five core educational missions as part of the “All for Education” strategy. This initiative promotes collaboration among educators, staff, and various sectors to develop a more relevant and efficient educational framework that caters to the genuine needs of students and their communities.

In alignment with the government’s Quick Win initiatives, the Ministry of Education plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on May 15 with 18 organizations aimed at creating an all-encompassing student safety framework. This partnership will involve coordination with the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Interior, the Royal Thai Police, and social welfare groups to enhance prevention, emergency response, and protective measures for students nationwide.

Additionally, the government is rolling out measures to alleviate living costs for parents during the back-to-school season. Through the “Back To School 2026” initiative, the Ministry of Commerce is set to provide discounts of up to 86 percent on over 1,000 education-related products and services, which include uniforms, books, learning materials, and IT devices.

These discounts will be accessible at department stores, government-affiliated shops, and online platforms from April 30 to May 31, 2026. Officials anticipate that the campaign will lead to total savings of approximately 300 million baht for families during this school reopening period.

Furthermore, the Cabinet has sanctioned an increase in student subsidies for the 2026 fiscal year, which will encompass both the latter half of the 2025 academic session and the new 2026 academic year. These enhanced subsidies will apply across all educational tiers, including pre-primary, primary, and secondary education.

Government representatives noted that this financial assistance will also cover expenses for uniforms, learning supplies, and additional support for small schools situated in rural locales. The objective of these initiatives is to ensure equitable access to education while alleviating financial strain on families and broadening educational opportunities for students nationwide.

Authorities articulated that the overarching reform and safety program is crafted to facilitate safer and more nurturing learning environments for Thai students. Officials are optimistic that bolstered infrastructure, improved safety protocols, and financial support measures will foster long-lasting educational development and expand prospects for youth throughout the nation.
