Thailand's GI Market Surpasses 440 Million Baht

Thailand's GI Market Surpasses 440 Million Baht

Post by : Shakul

The Thai government has reported impressive growth in Geographical Indication (GI) products, notably within the pottery, woven crafts, and natural materials sectors. These offerings are projected to generate a market value exceeding 440 million baht, underlining their rising significance in the economy.

A recent survey of 27 GI-registered items across 39 provinces indicates that these products not only safeguard traditional craftsmanship but also create substantial income for local communities, reflecting a growing demand for genuine, region-specific goods.

Leading the charge is Phatthalung sedge, which has garnered approximately 150 million baht. Its average price has surged to around 300 baht per piece, exemplifying how GI certification enhances marketability.

Other significant players include Kanchanaburi black spinel, contributing over 90 million baht, and Isaan traditional silk, with a market value surpassing 43 million baht. The increased pricing of these items indicates heightened demand and better branding.

Additionally, Lopburi kaolin and Pran Kratai marble are thriving, used in various applications ranging from construction to handicrafts, with prices climbing following their GI recognition. The diversity in pricing underscores their adaptability across industries.

Government officials assert that GI certification has elevated product standards, increased value, and cultivated a distinct identity for local offerings, allowing producers to compete more effectively on both domestic and global scales.

As part of its economic strategy, the government is actively promoting GI products. These items are integrated into the SME development policy, aimed at fortifying small businesses and ensuring sustainable income for rural areas.

Experts predict that with ongoing support, the GI market will continue to expand. As public awareness and demand rise, these traditional products are poised to increasingly impact Thailand's economy in the near future.
