The much-anticipated horror-comedy, The Raja Saab, featuring Prabhas, has made a significant impact at the box office, securing over ₹100 crore worldwide on its opening day. Despite negative reviews from critics, the film demonstrated the actor's robust fanbase across different regions.
As per preliminary reports from trade analyst Sacnilk.com, The Raja Saab garnered around ₹26 crore from international markets and achieved an impressive ₹54 crore net collection in India on its first day, including ₹9 crore from paid previews, culminating in a total of over ₹100 crore gross.
This strong debut emphasizes Prabhas' enduring box office draw, even as he ventures into a new genre. In this film, he plays a hypnotist, marking a departure from his recent action-centric roles.
Comparative Analysis with Prabhas' Previous Film
While The Raja Saab's opening is commendable, it falls short of the record set by Prabhas’ prior release, Kalki 2898 AD, which boasted an opening day collection of ₹191 crore globally, securing its place among the top openers in Indian cinema.
As reported by Taran Adarsh, Kalki 2898 AD drew ₹27.5 crore from its Hindi version alone on its first day, even amid competition from an important cricket match. The film ultimately grossed around ₹1100 crore in total.
Effect on Competing Releases
The launch of The Raja Saab has also influenced the box office dynamics of Dhurandhar, helmed by Aditya Dhar. After a successful run that surpassed ₹1200 crore globally, Dhurandhar's earnings took a dip, making just ₹3.5 crore on its 36th day, signaling the effect of The Raja Saab's debut.
About The Raja Saab
Directed by Maruthi and produced by TG Vishwa Prasad under People Media Factory, The Raja Saab features a talented ensemble cast, including Prabhas, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Malavika Mohanan, Nidhhi Agerwal, Riddhi Kumar, and Zarina Wahab.
Prabhas shared that the goal of The Raja Saab was to craft an all-encompassing entertainer rather than just another action film. He praised Maruthi’s storytelling and emphasized the climax as a standout aspect. The actor is optimistic about the film's performance during the Sankranti festival season.
According to an HT review, while The Raja Saab seeks to mix comedy with horror, it has been noted for its lack of depth and novelty. The review indicated that the horror-comedy format has seen better treatment in Indian cinema, suggesting a need for more compelling storytelling to resonate with audiences.
