At least one police officer has lost their life and numerous protesters have been hurt as followers of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) clashed with law enforcement in Lahore during an anti-Israel demonstration. The unrest broke out as demonstrators attempted to head towards the capital, Islamabad, on Monday.
TLP chief Saad Rizvi is among the injured, reportedly suffering multiple gunshot wounds when police fired into the crowd. According to TLP representatives, Rizvi is currently in critical condition. Claims circulating on social media about his death remain unverified by reliable sources.
Details of the Clashes
The protests escalated into violence when demonstrators attempted to dismantle police-erected shipping containers blocking roads. Punjab Police Chief Usman Anwar confirmed that protesters shot at officers, which led to the death of one police official and injuries to others. Over the weekend, police detained more than 100 demonstrators during the unrest.
Videos on social media depict Rizvi urging for an end to the gunfire and advocating for dialogue, all while shots are heard in the background. Additional footage shows vehicles ablaze, including a truck transporting TLP supporters for the “long march” that commenced in eastern Pakistan on Friday.
Objectives of the Protest
The rally led by TLP was meant to be a pro-Palestinian event outside the US Embassy in Islamabad. The party has previously coordinated such demonstrations in Lahore and various other cities across Pakistan. Tensions flared as protesters confronted police roadblocks, attempting to advance toward the embassy.
Public Response and Official Reactions
The violent demonstrations have met with mixed reactions. Some citizens of Pakistan criticized TLP for escalating tensions post-ceasefire in Gaza, while others alleged that the government overly responded by obstructing major roadways ahead of the protests.
Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry expressed his bewilderment over TLP's decision to resort to violence, saying it was misguided to turn the demonstration into a conflict instead of honoring the Gaza ceasefire.
About TLP
The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) rose to prominence in the 2018 elections, advocating for Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. Since then, the party has orchestrated aggressive rallies, especially against actions perceived as disrespectful towards Islam's holy Quran, both within the country and internationally.
This recent outbreak of violence underscores the persistent tensions between political-religious factions and authorities in Pakistan, heightening concerns over public safety and law enforcement during protests.
