Chelsea forward Cole Palmer will be sidelined for “six more weeks” due to a groin injury, confirmed manager Enzo Maresca on Friday. This update comes after initial hopes that Palmer could return following the international break without surgery.
Maresca explained, “I was wrong, unfortunately, he needs to be out for six more weeks.” He emphasized that the priority is ensuring Palmer’s full recovery, noting that medical staff can only work with natural healing processes.
Despite the extended layoff, Maresca highlighted that Palmer is in good spirits and committed to his rehabilitation. “He looks relaxed. He’s doing all the therapy that he needs to do. He looks good,” Maresca said, underlining the importance of patient recovery over rushing the player back.
The groin injury has limited Palmer’s participation this season. He went off after just 21 minutes in Chelsea’s defeat at Manchester United last month and has made only two starts across all competitions. His absence poses challenges for Chelsea’s attacking strategy.
Maresca described Palmer as “probably one of the best in the Premier League” and acknowledged that replacing him is difficult. Options depend on the game plan, with players such as Malo Gusto and Facundo Buonanotte stepping in during recent matches.
Chelsea will also have to monitor other injury concerns. Moisés Caicedo, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernández are all doubts for the upcoming Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, though Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, and Andrey Santos are expected to return.
One alternative to fill Palmer’s role could be Brazilian teenager Estêvão. The youngster has featured sparingly but scored a stoppage-time winner against Manchester City, hinting at his potential to impact games as Chelsea adjusts to Palmer’s absence.
The extended absence of Palmer will force Chelsea to adapt in midfield and attack. Maresca stressed that while the forward is irreplaceable in some ways, the team will explore tactical solutions and player rotations to maintain competitiveness in the Premier League.
