Deadly Tourist Bus Incident on Red Sea Highway: 2 Fatalities, 39 Injured

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In an unfortunate incident early Tuesday, a tourist bus collided with a heavy truck on Egypt’s Red Sea coastal highway, resulting in two deaths and 39 injuries near Ras Gharib, north of Hurghada. This tragic event involved foreign tourists on a guided trip from Hurghada to Cairo.

The victims were identified as the bus driver and one passenger. The injured included 27 Russians, seven Finns, two Lithuanians, and three Egyptians, including the tour guide and the truck driver. The bus’s front was completely demolished, leaving several passengers in critical condition.

Emergency teams rapidly arrived on-site, taking the injured to Ras Gharib Central Hospital, where many are under intensive care due to the severity of their injuries.

The Ministry of Tourism and affected foreign embassies have been notified to ensure the necessary consular support is accessible to the impacted tourists. Ras Gharib Prosecution has initiated a thorough investigation, which comprises site inspections, CCTV analysis, and obtaining witness statements to ascertain the accident's causes.

Initial inquiries indicate that distractions or speeding might have played a role in the crash. Local experts and residents have urged for separate lanes for heavy vehicles along this frequently trafficked coastal road, which has a history of fatal incidents, particularly during the bustling winter tourist season.

Authorities are actively pursuing investigations to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate highway tragedy.
