Catastrophic Flooding and Landslides in Central Vietnam Claim 16 Lives

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Central Vietnam is grappling with catastrophic flooding, torrential rain, and landslides that have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 16 lives since the weekend. As of Thursday, the government issued an alert regarding the escalating death toll, cautioning that water levels are surging in areas already submerged.

Over the course of the last three days, certain locations in central Vietnam have recorded more than 1,500 millimeters of rain, causing rivers and drainage systems to overflow. The severe rainfall has led to landslides in hilly regions while inundating low-elevation towns, leading to the destruction of homes and disruption of road access.

This region is vital for the nation’s coffee industry and tourism sector. Popular coastal destinations and resorts have been flooded, necessitating the evacuation of both residents and tourists to safer grounds. Emergency services are being deployed to assist those trapped, delivering food, water, and medical support.

Local authorities urge residents to remain indoors and steer clear of flood zones. They have also issued warnings concerning the likelihood of additional landslides as rainfall persists over the upcoming days.

Vietnam frequently experiences heavy downpours and flooding during the monsoon, especially in central provinces which are particularly susceptible due to their mountainous geography and river networks. Emergency response teams are actively monitoring developments to safeguard residents and mitigate further casualties.

With water levels anticipated to stay elevated in numerous towns, government officials are taking steps to prepare temporary shelters and distribute relief supplies to impacted communities. Citizens have been advised to remain alert and adhere to safety protocols.
