In a tragic incident on Thursday, a severe landslide occurred in Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia, leading to the death of six individuals and leaving 17 others unaccounted for, as reported by local officials on Saturday. Triggered by relentless heavy rain, the landslide buried several homes in the village of Cibeunying, shocking the local community and prompting urgent rescue efforts.
As per Antara, the national news agency, Budi Irawan, vice head of the disaster management agency, revealed that crews have located three more bodies, while still searching for the remaining 17 individuals. “We have recovered three more bodies, but 17 are still missing. Our teams are working tirelessly,” stated Budi.
The disaster struck late Thursday after a period of persistent rain had soaked the area, rendering the slopes dangerously unstable. Residents reported a loud rumbling sound preceding the slide, followed by mud and debris that engulfed homes, trapping several individuals underneath.
Emergency response teams, comprising disaster management staff and local volunteers, have mobilized to conduct search and rescue operations. Heavy machinery is deployed to clear debris while teams meticulously search the area for survivors. “Time is of the essence,” Budi emphasized. “We are constantly working to rescue those who might still be caught.”
Authorities have cautioned residents in the vicinity about the risk of further landslides, as Central Java is experiencing unusually high rainfall this season.
This disaster underscores the increasing vulnerability of Indonesian communities to natural disasters, driven by climate change and deforestation that undermine land stability. In recent years, the region has seen a rise in landslides and flooding, resulting in both life and property losses.
Local officials are focusing efforts on providing temporary shelters, food, and medical assistance to those affected. National agencies are actively monitoring weather conditions to mitigate further risks and avert additional tragedies.
As rescue initiatives continue, authorities aim to locate the missing individuals and assess the full extent of the structural damage. This incident highlights the urgent necessity for enhanced disaster readiness and early-warning systems in landslide-prone regions of Indonesia.
