Miami, USA – November 6, 2025: President Donald Trump on Thursday revised his account of the May 2025 India-Pakistan clashes, telling the America Business Forum in Miami that eight fighter aircraft were shot down, increasing his earlier figure of seven.
Trump said the ceasefire followed his alleged threat to withhold trade agreements unless both sides agreed to peace. "I said, 'I'm not going to make any trade deals with you guys unless you agree to peace,'" he told attendees, framing the episode as part of his record as an international dealmaker.
Indian authorities have repeatedly denied any US role in arranging the truce, stating that hostilities ended on May 10 after direct talks between Indian and Pakistani commanders. The fighting followed Operation Sindoor, in which India struck militant camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir after the killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.
Observers and officials have expressed skepticism about Trump's assertions, which he has reportedly repeated more than 60 times since May 2025. He has described the outcome as a ceasefire influenced by trade leverage that prevented a broader escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
The May confrontation lasted around four days, featuring cross-border gunfire and missile exchanges before Pakistan requested a halt to the fighting. While the clashes did not expand into full-scale war, Trump's description of his role in securing the pause is disputed by both governments.
The debate over these statements highlights the challenge of separating political claims from independently verified accounts in coverage of international conflicts and diplomacy.
