Trump Hosts Family of Slain West Virginia Guard Member at White House

Post by : Meena Hassan

On Sunday, President Donald Trump reached out to the grieving family of Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard tragically killed in Washington, D.C. last week. During the conversation with her devastated parents, Trump expressed his condolences.

The 20-year-old Beckstrom was shot during an incident that critically injured her comrade, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24. Both were on duty as part of a federal security operation in the capital.

Trump mentioned his desire to honor both families in a visit to the White House. “I told them, 'When you're ready, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,'” he shared with the press, adding similar sentiments for Andrew’s situation.

The West Virginia community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, with numerous vigils held in their honor, including one at Webster County High School where Beckstrom was a beloved student. Principal Gabriel Markle described her as someone embodying “quiet strength and a bright smile,” who always uplifted those around her.

Having recently graduated, Beckstrom enlisted in the National Guard in June 2023 and served as a military police officer. Wolfe, also noted for his service, joined in February 2019 after graduating from Musselman High School.

Authorities have charged a 29-year-old Afghan national with first-degree murder and two counts of armed assault in connection with the shooting, leading to the suspension of Afghan asylum applications and a temporary halt on visas for Afghan passport holders.

Funeral preparations for Beckstrom are currently being arranged by Dodd & Reed Funeral Home in Webster Springs, while Wolfe remains hospitalized in critical condition.

During a community vigil, Governor Patrick Morrisey commended Beckstrom's bravery and commitment, stating, “Though her life was far too short, she has left a lasting mark on her community,” honoring her as a “favorite daughter of Webster County” whose selflessness continues to inspire.

This outpouring of local and national support underscores the collective grief and recognition for the sacrifices made by young service members.
