Trump Commends Canada Amid Trade Talk Ambiguities

Post by : Meena Hassan

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Canada during a recent event, yet he did not clarify plans to resume trade discussions. En route to a gala in Washington, he described a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as “very good” and “productive.”

Carney’s office described the talks as “constructive.” However, when pressed about relaunching trade negotiations with Canada, which were stalled after Ontario ran anti-tariff ads, Trump responded with a vague “we’ll work it out.”

Trump acknowledged Canada as tough negotiators while also emphasizing his favorable relationship with Prime Minister Carney, even joking about the nation’s ice hockey prowess.

Earlier this year, Trump introduced tariffs impacting Canada and Mexico across various sectors, including steel and automobiles, with Canadian duties reaching up to 35% and Mexican ones 25%. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) offers protection from wider tariffs, yet it is set for a mandatory review next year. If consensus on renewal isn’t reached, the deal might end in 2036.

Both Canada and Mexico continue to seek methods to lower tariffs and preserve duty-free trade, amid swirling uncertainties surrounding U.S. trade policies. While Trump’s remarks convey a sense of cooperation, the outlook for North American trade remains unpredictable, heavily influenced by tariffs and negotiations.
