President Donald Trump hosted the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, paying tribute to Sylvester Stallone, Kiss, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Crawford, and George Strait as “legendary figures.” Making history as the first sitting president to preside over the event, he remarked that billions have appreciated their contributions and hailed them as “some of the greatest talents ever.”
Under Trump’s leadership, the Kennedy Center has become a key element of his cultural initiatives, with board restructures and more than $250 million allocated for upgrades. He humorously hinted at the possibility of renaming it the “Trump Kennedy Center.” Throughout the ceremony, Trump made three appearances, honoring the artists via live and recorded segments while sharing candid thoughts about the audience.
The honorees reflect a wide array of American cultural achievement: Stallone for his roles in “Rocky” and “Rambo,” Gaynor for the iconic “I Will Survive,” Kiss for their spectacular performances, Strait representing country music, and Crawford as a celebrated Broadway star. Trump emphasized that persistence is a common trait among both the artists and the audience.
The event featured touching tributes, particularly for Kiss, who honored their late guitarist Ace Frehley with a red guitar that emitted smoke. The night concluded with Cheap Trick's energetic rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite.”
Witnessing the occasion, the honorees expressed deep appreciation: Stallone described the honor as “like being in the eye of a hurricane,” Crawford called it “humbling, particularly at the end of a career,” while Gaynor viewed it as “a dream.”
Trump played a crucial role in the selection of this year's honorees, narrowing down over 50 nominees to five. Notably, some, like Stallone, have publicly supported him, while others have expressed diverse political opinions, choosing to focus on unity in light of his anticipated 2024 victory.
The Kennedy Center Honors broadcast is expected to attract a significant audience, with Trump forecasting record-viewing figures for the special.
