Trump Initiates Green Card Review for 19 Nations Amid Security Concerns

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The Trump administration has launched a comprehensive review of green cards granted to immigrants from 19 nations, sparked by worries regarding national security. Joseph Edlow, the head of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, stated that President Donald Trump has ordered a “thorough and rigorous reassessment” of all green cards held by individuals from countries flagged as security threats.

This decision follows an incident involving an Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who allegedly wounded two National Guard members in Washington DC on Wednesday. Lakanwal entered the US in 2021 through a special program designed to protect Afghans after the withdrawal from Afghanistan. President Trump categorized the assault as a significant national security concern, underscoring the urgency to reevaluate immigration policies.

Although Edlow did not directly associate the green card review with the latest incident, he affirmed that safeguarding the American populace remains the administration’s utmost priority. The review will encompass individuals from countries outlined in a White House proclamation from June which includes Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Iran, Somalia, and Venezuela, among others like Burma, Chad, the Republic of Congo, and Libya. This proclamation indicates that security issues and elevated rates of visa overstays prompted the inclusion of these nations.

The proclamation also mentions that Afghanistan is under Taliban governance, lacking a functional central authority for passport issuance and proper vetting measures, which amplifies risks for the US. Edlow remarked that past immigration policies had permitted entry from dangerous regions without the necessary safeguards, posing threats to national security.

In addition to the green card review, the Citizenship and Immigration Services recently announced a reassessment of refugee admissions under the Biden administration. Following the DC attack, processing of all Afghan immigration requests has been temporarily halted pending a review of security and vetting protocols.

The Trump administration's enhanced measures signify a sharper focus on national security and more rigorous immigration restrictions for individuals from high-risk countries. This review is designed to ensure that incoming immigrants do not jeopardize public safety, reinforcing a wider shift towards tighter scrutiny and better protection for American citizens.

This shift represents a notable change in US immigration policy enforcement and is anticipated to affect numerous green card holders from various scrutinized countries.
