In a striking move ahead of his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will immediately resume testing nuclear weapons. Posting on his platform Truth Social, Trump emphasized that the tests are necessary to maintain parity with other global nuclear powers.
“Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately,” Trump said, highlighting the urgency to assert US strategic strength.
Trump underscored the United States’ nuclear superiority, noting, “Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within five years,” signaling growing concern over Beijing’s expanding military capabilities.
This announcement comes amid heightened global tensions, with Russia recently showcasing advanced nuclear technology, including the Poseidon nuclear-powered super torpedo, capable of generating devastating radioactive ocean swells. Putin’s tests, combined with Trump’s aggressive nuclear stance, underscore a renewed arms competition between the US, Russia, and China.
The United States has not conducted a nuclear test since 1992. Nuclear tests are critical not only to validate the effectiveness of new weapons but also to ensure that older arsenals remain reliable. Beyond technical purposes, these tests carry a strong symbolic weight, signaling US military dominance to other nuclear states.
Historically, the US pioneered the nuclear era in 1945 with the first atomic bomb tests at Alamogordo, New Mexico, followed by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, effectively ending World War II. Trump’s announcement marks a potential new chapter in nuclear diplomacy, heightening global scrutiny as he meets Xi to discuss ongoing trade and security issues.
The decision has sparked worldwide attention, with analysts warning that renewed nuclear tests could escalate tensions and prompt retaliatory measures by other nuclear powers, potentially reshaping the geopolitical landscape in Asia and beyond.
