The National Pavilion UAE has announced the appointment of Bana Kattan as the curator for the country’s participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2026. Kattan, who currently serves as Curator and Associate Head of Exhibitions at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, was chosen for her extensive experience in curating contemporary art exhibitions and her deep understanding of the UAE’s cultural landscape.
Selection by Leading Creative Figures
Bana Kattan was selected by a committee of prominent figures from the UAE’s creative sector, including representatives from government, museums, and universities. The committee highlighted her ability to bring together multigenerational and interdisciplinary perspectives in art, which aligns with the Pavilion’s vision for a meaningful international presentation.

Before joining the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Kattan was Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, curating exhibitions that featured artists such as Wafaa Bilal, Maryam Taghavi, and Mona Hatoum. At the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, she developed research-driven exhibitions, including Permanent Temporariness by Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, and But We Cannot See Them, which highlighted the UAE’s pioneering art community. Her career reflects a dedication to exploring social, political, and historical narratives while fostering dialogue across generations.
Connection to UAE Art Scene
Born and raised in Abu Dhabi, Kattan has witnessed the growth of the UAE’s artistic landscape firsthand. Her deep roots in the country’s cultural environment allow her to engage effectively with local and regional artists, bringing forward perspectives that resonate both locally and internationally. Her work aims to reflect the UAE’s evolving creative scene on the global stage.
Support from Ministry of Culture
Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, UAE Minister of Culture, praised Kattan’s appointment, stating that it reflects the Ministry’s commitment to amplifying the UAE’s cultural and creative voice worldwide. He emphasized that the Biennale 2026 exhibition would continue to affirm the UAE’s role as a center for creativity and cultural dialogue.
