UAE Strengthens Energy and Sustainability Ties with Belgium

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A high-level UAE delegation led by Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, concluded a successful official visit to Belgium, aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in energy, water, and sustainability. This visit follows the recent trip of Maxime Prévot, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, to Abu Dhabi, where he met H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

High-Level Meetings with Belgian Officials

During the visit, the UAE delegation engaged with senior Belgian officials, including Mathieu Bihet, Minister of Energy, and Ambassador Willem van de Voorde, Special Envoy for Climate and Environment. The delegation also met key industry leaders from Belgium’s energy, sustainability, and academic sectors. Discussions focused on enhancing strategic partnerships to ensure energy security, accelerate the clean energy transition, and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These meetings underscored the UAE’s commitment to forging long-term collaborations that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges Visit Highlights Infrastructure Collaboration

Abdulla Balalaa toured the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, accompanied by Johan Klaps, Chairman of the port authority. The visit highlighted opportunities for collaboration on energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and sustainable logistics. The port, a critical hub for Europe’s energy and trade networks, offers a platform for joint initiatives and knowledge sharing between the UAE and Belgium in energy management, water sustainability, and renewable energy technologies.

MoU Signed to Boost Research and Innovation

A significant milestone of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Khalifa University (KU) and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO). This agreement aims to enhance joint research, knowledge exchange, and innovation in sustainable technologies. The partnership will focus on initiatives supporting the global energy transition, water efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Through collaborative research, both institutions seek to develop cutting-edge solutions that can be applied in industrial and societal contexts, demonstrating the UAE’s commitment to sustainability leadership.

Platform for Bilateral Networking and Collaboration

The visit also featured a high-level reception, gathering senior stakeholders from both countries across government, business, and academia. This event provided a platform to highlight UAE–Belgium collaboration opportunities, promote investment in energy and water projects, and reinforce institutional links. By fostering direct dialogue between key decision-makers, the UAE aims to strengthen cooperation and encourage joint ventures that benefit both nations’ economic and environmental agendas.

Focus on Strategic Energy and Water Initiatives

Abdulla Balalaa emphasized the UAE’s dedication to building long-term partnerships in sectors of mutual strategic interest. “This visit reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to strengthening ties with Belgium and working together on areas of shared interest, including nuclear and renewable energy, water, and innovation,” he said. The delegation’s discussions also highlighted the importance of translating dialogue into actionable projects that drive innovation, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.

Strengthening Institutional and Scientific Cooperation

The UAE delegation included senior representatives from Masdar, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), and Khalifa University, highlighting the country’s integrated approach to sustainability. These institutions bring expertise in renewable energy, nuclear technology, and scientific research, creating opportunities for joint studies, knowledge sharing, and implementation of advanced solutions. By collaborating with Belgian institutions, the UAE reinforces its role as a global leader in sustainable energy practices and environmental stewardship.

Commitment to Long-Term Partnerships

The visit has laid the foundation for long-term cooperation in energy, water, and sustainability. By combining technological expertise, research capabilities, and policy knowledge, the UAE and Belgium aim to develop initiatives that contribute to global energy transition goals. These partnerships will facilitate joint innovation, sustainable infrastructure projects, and knowledge exchange, ensuring both nations remain at the forefront of renewable energy and environmental advancement.

UAE as a Global Sustainability Partner

The Belgium visit reaffirms the UAE’s position as a trusted international partner in driving the global energy transition. By fostering collaborations that integrate energy security, clean technologies, and water sustainability, the UAE demonstrates its commitment to achieving the United Nations SDGs while promoting economic growth. The agreements and discussions during this visit are expected to generate long-term benefits for both countries, reinforcing institutional ties and advancing scientific, technological, and commercial collaboration.
