The United Arab Emirates hosted the 43rd meeting of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy in Abu Dhabi, marking the first time this important global meeting was held in the country since it joined the panel. The event highlighted the UAE’s growing role in nature protection and its strong support for global efforts to protect oceans and the environment.
Over three days, representatives from 15 member countries gathered in Abu Dhabi to discuss ways to improve sustainable ocean management and strengthen international cooperation. The meeting focused on protecting ocean health, improving resilience, and supporting long-term environmental sustainability for future generations.
The meeting was co-chaired by Norway’s Special Envoy Georg Børsting and PalaFu’s Ambassador Ilana Seid, and hosted by Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, the UAE President’s Sherpa to the Ocean Panel. The discussions formed part of the UAE’s wider efforts to encourage global collaboration on environmental and ocean-related challenges.
During the sessions, Al Mubarak shared updates on the UAE’s National Ocean Panel, launched earlier this year at the United Nations General Assembly. The initiative reflects a whole-of-government approach aimed at aligning national actions with global ocean sustainability goals.
Speakers highlighted the importance of oceans in climate resilience, food security, and sustainable development. Delegates exchanged ideas on scientific cooperation, knowledge sharing, and supporting countries in implementing ocean protection policies.
The meeting ended with a strong commitment from all members to continue working together for 100 percent sustainable ocean management. Participants praised the UAE’s leadership and ongoing contributions to global ocean conservation efforts.
