FANR Opens Global Radiological Protection Event

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) announced the opening of the 8th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection in Abu Dhabi. Organised in cooperation with the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the three-day event brings together more than 500 experts, scientists, and policymakers from 53 countries. This makes it one of the largest global meetings focused on radiological protection and safety.

UAE’s Leadership in Nuclear Safety

This is the second time the UAE has hosted this prestigious symposium. The decision reflects the nation’s growing role in promoting global nuclear safety, radiation management, and sustainable radiological practices. By hosting such an international event, the UAE demonstrates its commitment to building strong partnerships that promote safety, innovation, and transparency in nuclear and radiological fields.

Theme Focuses on Innovation and Sustainability

The 2025 symposium is held under the theme “Advancing Radiological Protection: Innovation, Integrity and Sustainability.” The agenda covers a wide variety of topics, from new medical applications to environmental protection. Sessions explore how innovation can improve radiological safety while maintaining ethical standards and protecting the environment for future generations.

Medical Applications and New Therapies

A major focus of the symposium is the role of advanced medical applications in radiological protection. Experts are discussing the use of proton and heavy-ion therapies, which are advanced methods of treating cancer with precision radiation. Sessions also explore new trends in radiotherapy that aim to improve patient outcomes while reducing unnecessary radiation exposure.

Artificial Intelligence and Regulation

The growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) is another key subject at the symposium. Discussions highlight how AI can help improve radiological monitoring, data analysis, and safety management. However, experts also stress the importance of strong regulatory frameworks to ensure AI is used responsibly and ethically in radiological practices.

Environmental and Ecosystem Protection

One of the symposium’s sessions focuses on environmental protection and the effects of radiation on ecosystems and biodiversity. Experts from around the world are sharing research on how radiation impacts various living organisms and are proposing new ways to monitor and reduce environmental risks. The goal is to strengthen sustainable practices that balance scientific progress with environmental preservation.

Radiation Risks in Space Exploration

Another exciting area of discussion is space exploration. With more countries and private companies joining the space race, experts are assessing radiological risks for astronauts who face high radiation levels beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The symposium is exploring new technologies and strategies to protect space travelers and support safe space missions.

FANR Highlights UAE’s Global Role

Ambassador Hamad Al Kaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Deputy Chairman of FANR, emphasized that hosting this event shows the UAE’s deep commitment to international cooperation. He stated that as technology advances rapidly through AI and space applications, it is vital to ensure that safety, sustainability, and public trust remain at the heart of all progress.

ICRP Recognizes FANR’s Support

Werner Rühm, Chair of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, expressed appreciation for FANR’s strong support in organizing the event. He said that ICRP 2025, featuring 28 sessions, would play a key role in shaping the future of radiological protection. The discussions held during the symposium will also help guide the next set of General Recommendations for global radiological safety standards.

Encouraging the Next Generation

The symposium also celebrates young scientists through the Cousins Award for Young Scientists and Professionals. This award highlights emerging leaders who are contributing innovative research and practical solutions to strengthen radiological protection. Their involvement ensures that the next generation is ready to take forward the mission of safety, responsibility, and sustainability in this vital field.

Strong International Cooperation

International organisations such as the IAEA, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD-NEA) are contributing to the discussions. Their participation underscores the importance of joint global action to promote radiation safety, protect human health, and enhance international scientific collaboration.

A Global Commitment to Radiological Safety

The 8th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection marks a major step forward in building global understanding and cooperation. With experts addressing challenges in medical treatment, artificial intelligence, environmental protection, and even space exploration, the event serves as a reminder that radiological safety is a shared responsibility. The UAE’s hosting of this international event further cements its reputation as a regional leader in promoting innovation, integrity, and sustainability in nuclear and radiological regulation.
