The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced a large-scale project aimed at upgrading and expanding Emirates Road, one of the country’s busiest highways. This initiative is part of a broader national plan to address traffic congestion and ensure smoother travel for residents and businesses. The project reflects the government’s efforts to build a modern, efficient, and sustainable road network that supports the country’s long-term growth goals.

Supporting UAE's Economic and Social Growth

According to officials, this project will play a critical role in supporting economic development, improving daily commutes, and increasing the efficiency of the federal road network. The Emirates Road upgrade is being rolled out in collaboration with local government entities to ensure smooth planning, coordination, and delivery. By doing so, the government aims to meet the increasing demands of population growth and rising vehicle usage in the UAE.

Details of the Expansion Plan

One of the major components of the project is the expansion of Emirates Road from three lanes to five lanes in each direction. This will take place over a 25-kilometre stretch, starting from the Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah and extending to the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. This expansion alone is expected to increase the road's capacity by 65 percent, allowing it to handle up to 9,000 vehicles per hour in each direction.

New Interchange and Additional Infrastructure

Alongside the lane expansion, the project also includes a complete upgrade of Interchange No. 7 on Emirates Road. This involves building six directional bridges, with a total length of 12.6 kilometres. These bridges are designed to handle 13,200 vehicles per hour, greatly improving the movement of traffic at one of the road’s most crucial intersections. In addition, collector roads will be built on both sides of Emirates Road, stretching over 3.4 kilometres, to further ease traffic flow.

Project Timeline and Budget

The development is expected to begin in September 2025 and will continue for a period of two years. The total investment for the project has been estimated at AED750 million. According to the Ministry, the project will follow the highest international standards in terms of design, safety, and execution. When completed, it will result in reduced travel times, improved road safety, and better service flow for both residents and logistics providers.

Travel Time to Reduce by 45 Percent

One of the most significant benefits of the Emirates Road upgrade is the expected reduction in travel time by up to 45 percent. Commuters who travel daily between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai will benefit from smoother journeys and reduced delays. This improvement is particularly important for the movement of goods and services, which is essential for the UAE's growing economy.

Minister Highlights Strategic Importance

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized that this project is not just a transportation upgrade but a strategic move to enable national progress. He noted that road infrastructure has been a central point of discussion during UAE Government Annual Meetings, where improving traffic management and connectivity was recognized as a key priority for development.

A Vision for a Connected Future

In his statement, Al Mazrouei said,

“This project is a major step toward realising the UAE’s vision of building an integrated road network that supports both population needs and economic expansion. By reducing travel time and easing congestion, we aim to raise the quality of life for our residents while supporting our sustainability goals.”

He added that the project reflects the country’s broader mission to deliver innovative and practical solutions that improve mobility, reduce emissions, and ensure high-quality transport services for years to come.

Sustainable and Long-Term Infrastructure

The Emirates Road expansion is part of the Ministry’s comprehensive plan to build long-term, resilient infrastructure that keeps pace with future needs. According to officials, all planning and construction will be aligned with engineering and safety benchmarks used globally. These efforts will also support the UAE’s broader goals under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Enhancing Logistics and Business Flow

The improved Emirates Road will not only help private vehicle users but will also make a big difference for commercial transportation. Faster movement of goods between emirates like Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah is expected to improve the supply chain, reduce fuel consumption, and cut delivery times. The Ministry also aims to boost the logistics sector, one of the key components of the country’s economic diversification efforts.

Integrated Infrastructure for the Future

In addition to road upgrades, the Ministry is also focusing on integrating new technologies and smart traffic systems to manage vehicle flow better. The Emirates Road project is expected to work in harmony with these digital solutions, further enhancing road efficiency, safety, and environmental performance.

A Model for Upcoming Infrastructure Projects

Eng. Hassan Al Mansouri, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, stated that the Emirates Road project will serve as a benchmark for future national infrastructure projects. He highlighted that the Ministry has committed to applying global best practices in every phase of the project, from planning and budgeting to execution and monitoring.

Al Mansouri also pointed out that Emirates Road is one of the most important federal roads under the Ministry's jurisdiction, connecting several emirates and handling a high daily traffic volume. Improving its efficiency is, therefore, a national priority.

Preparing for Future Demands

With the UAE’s population and economic activities expected to grow significantly in the coming years, the need for upgraded road networks becomes more urgent. The Emirates Road project is part of the country’s forward-thinking approach to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with urban expansion, rising traffic, and industrial growth.

A Clear Message of Progress

Through this ambitious project, the UAE is sending a clear message — it is committed to building a safe, smart, and sustainable transportation system that serves the people and powers national development. The Emirates Road upgrade will not only reduce congestion but also raise the standard for future infrastructure across the region.
