Al Ain: The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has launched a pioneering Smart Mushroom House, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to promoting sustainable farming practices and ensuring food security in the country.
Situated at Al Foah Research Farm in the Al Ain region, this facility utilizes cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to optimize the environment for mushroom cultivation. The initiative aligns seamlessly with the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, advocating for a circular bioeconomy.
Developed by researchers from UAEU’s College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine as part of the ARIFSID project, it seeks to convert agricultural waste—particularly date palm residues—into nutrient-rich substrates for mushroom growth. Spearheaded by Dr. Shyam S. Kurup in partnership with the University of Malaya’s Omex Laboratory, the project is paving the way for innovative agricultural solutions.
The Smart Mushroom House comprises three intelligent cultivation tents and a central incubator, allowing for precise control over temperature, humidity, lighting, and ventilation. This design facilitates the concurrent cultivation of various mushroom species under ideal conditions.
The facility can manage up to 600 cultivation bags per cycle, processing nearly three tonnes of substrate and achieving a production yield of 20–30% based on the species. Research currently focuses on oyster mushrooms, lion’s mane, Ganoderma, turkey tail, and king oyster varieties, with ongoing efforts to domesticate local desert truffles known as Faqa or Zubaidi.
In addition to cultivation, the initiative investigates novel applications, including mycelium-based functional foods, edible films, and turning spent mushroom waste into nano-biochar, thus enhancing sustainable practices.
A significant objective of this initiative is to develop local talent. The facility supports numerous research projects featuring Emirati students, who are advancing production techniques compatible with UAE’s climate. Their work has received accolades at national sustainability and agricultural conferences.
Moreover, the Smart Mushroom House acts as a training centre for students, farmers, and members of the community interested in sustainable agriculture. By transforming agricultural waste into valuable food products, this project exemplifies the integration of smart technology and innovative sustainability.
Through this initiative, UAEU continues to lead the way in research-oriented solutions focused on improving food security in arid environments.
