The United Kingdom has finalized a significant trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), projected to elevate trade by approximately $5 billion each year in the long run.
The GCC comprises six member states: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked that this agreement will enhance economic relationships between Britain and the Gulf, while opening new avenues for trade and investment.
According to the UK government, the deal is anticipated to yield around £3.7 billion (AED 18.21 billion) annually over time, significantly higher than the previous estimate of £1.6 billion, due to broader trade liberalization and stronger service sector commitments.
As part of this agreement, 93% of GCC tariffs on British exports will be eliminated. The UK government projects tariff reductions worth £580 million by the tenth year following implementation, with a substantial portion lifted immediately upon the agreement's activation.
Various British sectors, such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, food, and beverages, are expected to reap benefits, with items like cereals, cheddar cheese, chocolate, and butter becoming tariff-free in GCC markets.
In exchange, the UK will also lower tariffs on imports from the GCC, although most oil and gas exports from Gulf nations were already entering the UK tariff-free.
The agreement places a strong emphasis on the services sector, enabling British firms continued access to GCC markets with no additional restrictions, while allowing Gulf countries to broaden their service industries.
The UK government confirmed that this deal will not compromise British environmental regulations or data protection standards and clarified that it contains no clauses related to human rights.
Britain’s Trade Minister Peter Kyle stated that this agreement is a significant vote of confidence during global economic uncertainty, emphasizing that the UK has become the first G7 country to secure a contemporary trade pact with the GCC.
