Five Nations Elected to UN Security Council for 2027-2028

Five Nations Elected to UN Security Council for 2027-2028

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a significant move, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has determined the five nations that will join the UN Security Council as non-permanent members for the period from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2028.

The countries selected are Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe. This election occurred on June 3 at the UN headquarters, with the members earning their seats as representatives of their respective regional groups.

Austria and Portugal claimed two seats intended for the Western European and Other States Group. Representing the Latin American and Caribbean Group, Trinidad and Tobago was elected, while the African Group seat was secured by Zimbabwe. Kyrgyzstan will represent the Asia-Pacific Group.

A notable milestone, this election marks Kyrgyzstan's inaugural term on the UN Security Council since it joined the United Nations in 1992.

Historically, Austria and Portugal have both previously served on the Council three times; Zimbabwe has served on two occasions, and Trinidad and Tobago once.

These five countries will replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, whose tenure on the Security Council wraps up at the end of 2026.

The UN Security Council is composed of 15 members, with five permanent members having veto power—Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France—alongside 10 non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for staggered two-year periods.

The newly elected members are set to commence their duties on January 1, 2027.
